Visual testing
The first method applied to any job and the prerequisite for all the others.
SR EN ISO 17637SR EN ISO 5817SR EN 13018
How the method works
Direct or aided examination of the surface, performed by certified personnel under controlled lighting and viewing conditions. Joint geometry, weld bead appearance and visible discontinuities are assessed against the quality levels required by the applicable standard.
What it detects
- Visible cracks, undercut, craters
- Excessive reinforcement and underfill
- Spatter, arc strikes, crater pipes
- Deviations from the specified joint geometry
- Corrosion, erosion, plastic deformation
Typical applications
- Acceptance of welded joints, prior to any other method
- Stage inspection: fit-up, root run, capping run
- Periodic maintenance inspections
- General condition assessment of equipment and structures

Limitations
No method answers everything. We say up front where it stops, so we can pick the right technique for your job together.
- Detects only what is visible at the surface
- Requires physical access and a minimum of 350 lx illumination at the examined surface
- The result depends on operator experience
- The surface must be cleaned before examination
