How the method works
The part is magnetised and a suspension of ferromagnetic particles is applied to its surface. At a discontinuity the magnetic field leaks out of the material and attracts the particles, which build up and make the defect visible to the naked eye under white or ultraviolet light.
What it detects
- Surface and near-surface cracks
- Lack of fusion and lack of penetration in welds
- Laps and laminations
- Cold and hot cracking in the heat-affected zone
- Forging and casting defects open to the surface

Limitations
No method answers everything. We say up front where it stops, so we can pick the right technique for your job together.
- Applicable only to ferromagnetic materials — not usable on austenitic stainless steel, aluminium or copper
- Detects surface and near-surface defects only
- Sensitivity depends on defect orientation relative to the magnetising direction, which is why two perpendicular directions are used
- The surface must be free of thick paint, rust and scale
