How the method works
A piezoelectric probe launches a high-frequency ultrasonic beam into the material. The waves travel through the part and reflect at interfaces — the back wall or an internal discontinuity. The received echoes are displayed on the flaw detector as amplitude against time of flight, allowing both detection and depth location of the defect.
What it detects
- Internal cracks at any depth
- Lack of fusion and lack of root penetration in welds
- Slag inclusions and clustered porosity
- Laminations and segregations in rolled products
- Material loss from internal corrosion
Typical applications
- Butt welds in pressure vessels and piping
- Heavy-section forgings
- Plate and rolled products, for laminations
- Volumetric inspection as an alternative to radiography

Limitations
No method answers everything. We say up front where it stops, so we can pick the right technique for your job together.
- Requires experienced personnel — echo interpretation is not automatic
- Complex geometries and rough surfaces significantly reduce sensitivity
- Coarse-grained materials such as cast austenitic stainless steel strongly attenuate the beam
- Defects oriented parallel to the beam may be missed
- A couplant is required between probe and part
