Ultrasonic thickness measurement

Determining remaining wall thickness with access from one side only.

How the method works

The transit time of an ultrasonic pulse between the entry surface and the back wall is measured. Knowing the velocity of sound in the material, the time converts directly into thickness. No access to the opposite face is needed, which makes the method indispensable for in-service piping and vessels.

What it detects

  • Wall loss from general corrosion
  • Pitting corrosion and localised erosion
  • Thinning at bends and in turbulent flow zones
  • Thickness deviations from design documentation

Limitations

No method answers everything. We say up front where it stops, so we can pick the right technique for your job together.

  • Requires exact knowledge of the sound velocity in the material
  • Thick paint layers or deposits affect readings unless an echo-to-echo instrument is used
  • Very rough or heavily corroded surfaces degrade accuracy
  • Measurement is point-based — coverage depends on the density of the agreed grid
